The influences of extrusion dies quality

The influences of extrusion dies quality
 
     More and more aluminum extrusion manufactures are care about the service life of extrusion dies because if the die can’t extrude certain billet, means they need to increase the production cost. Recently some of my foreign clients or friends said their dies were not durable. We has tried to help them figure up their problems and we found that there are some factors which are influencing the die service life:
 
1. The capacity ton of aluminum extrusion press
We found that many clients or friends have one or two aluminum extrusion press, most of them are big capacity ton like 1800MT (7’’) or 1450T (6’’), so they want to use big capacity machine to extrude the small and thin aluminum profile, so the extrusion pressure will be very high, some are higher than 230~240 kg/cm2, (ideal condition is 210kg/cm2); the extrusion proportion is too large, it will be very easy to push down the working zone of the dies. Normally we suggest to adopt the multi-cavity dies and the handing table must be equipped with puller. If still not work, guess you need to consider about a small capacity ton aluminum extrusion line. At our factory, when clients supply their cross section drawings or samples, we will send to our cooperative dies manufacture to check, and we will communicate with each others, then according to our experience to recommend a suitable capacity ton machine for clients.
 
2. Standard configuration to produce all thickness range of aluminum profiles.
 
Usually at our factory, when we meet to clients face to face, we ask a lot of questions and get to know what kinds of aluminum profile they will produce. We will special design the hydraulic system and electricity circuit according to different kinds of aluminum profile. For example, the pump model has 160, 170, 190, 250 etc. We will adopts thickness range of aluminum profile to offer different and durable model pump to them. So the extrusion press can be easy to control around at 210kg/cm2, meanwhile it will be good for the die extrusion. If your machine is standard configuration and you want to produce some special aluminum profile and increase the output of produce, we can offer you a suitable pump. If the hydraulic system is complicated, we can help you to modify it to simple type and easy to operation and durable.
 
3. Nitriding process
 
The extrusion die works at the condition of strong extrusion force and high temperature, it needs to stand the very strong friction. So after the extrusion die used a certain time, it need to use the nitriding furnace to do hardening process.
 
Some clients don’t have their own nitriding plant, or they send their dies to outside factory for treatment, so the dies don’t have sufficient nitriding treatment. Then you can consider to build your own nitrding plant. We are professional at nitriding process and offer you a durable and stable nitrding furnace, and supply the nitrrding process guidance.
 
If your company already has the nitrding furnace, then you need to check the nitriding process and nitriding time, temperature, ammonia gas flow, decomposition rate if correct or not.
 
4. Die design and quality
 
When you send a drawing to the die designer, they will help you to design the die, usually if they found the profile is not good to design or they will suggest you how to modify it, so the die service life can be longer. If you don’t take their advise, then you will know that the die design is a problem.
 
H13 is the raw material of the die, but H13 material has pure ingredient or scrap type ingredient. Pure ingredient quality will be better than scrap type ingredient quality. You can check the dies manufacture workshop, to find the scrap, if their scrap roll to a small round bar, means they use good quality steel.
 
5. Die correcting
 
After extrusion, the experience technician will check the die butt, they will correct the working zone of dies according to the die butt direction. And there are many others kills of dies, and the dies working zone polishing and etc.
 
6. Container is unclean
 
There are too much aluminum scrap (aluminum dross) at the location of the extrusion container entrance or the holes of extrusion container, you have to clean it by regularly.
